Catherine Tebbs York
2018 – High Point, NC
A graduate of Westchester Country Day School, Catherine is the daughter of Gregory and Caren York of High Point, North Carolina. Catherine is a four-year varsity tennis athlete and also competes on the varsity swim team. She serves on the honor council and is a member of the National Honor Society. She has participated in student government for seven years and serves as president in her senior year. She was a member of the mock trial team for four years and has won Best Attorney and Best Witness twice at the regional competition. Catherine has tutored Spanish speaking children through the Communities in Schools Breakfast Buddies program, the Latino Family Center, and her school. She rides horses in the English style and has competed regionally through the Interscholastic Equestrian Association and locally in the Steeple Hill summer show series. She also teaches riding lessons to beginners. Last summer, for ten weeks, Catherine taught sailing and served as a cabin counselor to ten-year-old girls at Camp Seafarer in Arapahoe, North Carolina. At Duke, Catherine hopes to study abroad, write for The Chronicle, ride on the equestrian club team, and participate as a Cameron Crazie. She plans to pursue a major in public policy or English.
